August 26th is International Dog Day. This inspired me to grab a large pile of dog books from the library. I picked 7 GREAT Dog Picture Books to share, but FIRST…

I want to introduce you to my dog, Pattie Cake!

She is a two year old shih-poo. Pattie Cake loves string cheese, cookies, cuddling, playing fetch and going for walks. AND Pattie Cake can play Patty Cake!

Okay, lets get to those 7 Great Dog Picture Books:

Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann is a classic. Officer Buckle delivers very thorough safety presentations. The audience is fully engaged. One day Officer Buckle realizes Gloria is the reason the audience is interested in the show. Will this new realization put an end to their show and friendship?

Sheep Dog and Sheep Sheep by Eric Barclay. Sheep Dog is in charge of protecting sheep. Sheep decides to help him do his job better. In fact, she is sure she could do his job better. Sheep decides to become a sheep sheep. The only problem is, there are not any other sheep.

Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings. Dog is in look for a new owner. He sends a letter to a local family, the butcher, the fire department and more but nobody seems to want him. Will Dog find a home?

Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey. Pig is a selfish pug. He does not like to share. One day his selfishness reaches a climax and Pig falls out the window. Will Pug change? Fun rhyming book. Great to open discussion on sharing.

Bad Dog by Mike Boldt. I went back in forth on posting this book, because technically it is about a cat? Oh well. It is a great book, so I will let you decide. This book is about a child who is very disappointed because her new “dog” will not do any of the things a dog is supposed to do. The reader will realize “dog” is actually a “cat” right from the start.

The last two books are small board books. They are FABULOUS! I love, love, love Sandra Boynton, especially if I am reading to a toddler. Perfect length. Snuggle Puppy is a cute little love song with a Dad and his pup. Doggies is a fun counting book with different varieties of dogs and they all have different barks. It is way fun to make all the individual barking noises.

Go grab yourself some great dog books and enjoy!
